An hour later he returned to the gantry. “Where is the Senior Technician?” Kaitlin asked.

“He felt ill and is in the bathroom,” Sharandar said, sliding his hands in his pockets. “Are you wrapped up?”

“Affirmative,” Kaitlin said. “She is all yours.”

Yes, she is…and so is her mate.

THE CLAN HOME WORLDS

12 APRIL 2863

Tyrilla Heller assembled her nine warriors around the holotable in the tactical operations room in Tristen, some 30 kilometers from the site of the upcoming Trial. They had trained several times together, and in two days would be defending the most prized assets of their people. Every warrior there understood the burden they faced, despite outnumbering their foes by a two-to-one margin.

“The Jade Falcon commander, a Star Commander Kerek Helmer, has sent us his force composition.” Tyrilla brought up the ’Mech files on the table. “A Conjurer, a Warhammer IIC, a Thug, a King Crab, and a Vapor Eagle.”

“I am surprised by the Thug and King Crab,” Star Colonel Nash said. “They are older models. Aff, they are likely the Royal versions, but I would have expected something more from this Star Commander.”

Star Captain Julie Clearwater weighed in. “We must assume they have changed their configurations in some manner.”

“Aff,” Tyrilla replied. “Even so, the Jade Falcons are nothing if not consistent in their approach to these Trials. Every time they have fought us, their forces rush in to try and engage at optimal ranges.”

“Up close and personal,” Star Colonel Nash added.

“Correct. It is part of their doctrine and they will, no doubt, try it again.” Tyrilla rotated through the Jade Falcon ’Mechs until she reached the assault class. “That King Crab is slow. It is devastating when it gets in close with those large caliber autocannons, but it is ponderous. The Thug will win no races either. As such, I have chosen configurations for our Omnis that factor that in.”

“They may have mass on us, but we have speed. Speed is armor for our Omnis,” Star Captain Ramses Koga said. “That, and we have numbers. We will need to keep moving, get to their flanks and rear.”

While Ramses could feel an advantage, Tyrilla could not afford that. “Do not let our numbers or technology make you overconfident. The reason we bid so many to protect our technology is because of its value. The Jade Falcons know this. They each have to take out two of us to be victorious, and we have all had similar results in our Trials of Position—as have they. We cannot rely just on our technology to win, your skills will separate our victory from defeat.”

There were solemn nods from around the holotable as she activated it. “Alright then, let us discuss the best way to strip these Falcons of their wings.”
