Sandra Turley fought her way back to consciousness. Her five-point safety restraint bit cruelly into her shoulders and breasts. A stiletto-sharp pain on her left side told her something was broken—probably a rib. And her skull pulsed with agony.

She struggled to get the Flashman up.

Sandra couldn’t stand, but if she could kneel on the left leg and prop herself up on her right arm, she could bring her left arm and her torso-mounted weapons to bear.

The crippled Flashman fell back, and pain stole her breath away. For a moment she lay there, sweating and gasping for air.

All of Sandra’s actions had been textbook. When your flank is turned, execute a fighting withdrawal to a defensible position and then reform and call for reinforcements. That was doctrine. Every ComStar field officer knew that.

But the Clanners had come on too fast.

They had cut into her battalion before she could reset her line.

“Three-Twenty-Third Actual, Second Battalion. The Diamond Sharks have broken my line. I say again, my line is—”

She didn’t get the rest of her report out.

The Mad Dog stalked up to her and brought one splayed food down on the prone Flashman’s cockpit, crushing the ComStar pilot beneath sixty tons of fury.

That descending foot was the last thing Sandra Turley ever saw.

And after she was dead, the Clanner machine went off to search for new prey.
