“Are you really sure this is a good idea?”

Amelia allowed her gaze to flick over to Sparrow, who had followed her out of the conference room, forcing down her instinctive flash of resentment at the question. She allowed her gaze to hold on Ron for a moment, letting him know she had this, and then turned to the younger man, her gaze steady. “Am I sure about what, Mr. Sparrow?”

To his credit, the FedSuns officer did not shy away from his gaze. “With all due respect, Colonel, you are betting a great deal on your unit’s ability to take on other units. The Federated Suns needs the Eridani Light Horse—the entire Eridani Light Horse—and we need them as soon as possible.” He shook his head slightly. “I just don’t see how this is getting us any closer to that goal.”

Amelia nodded, understanding the undercurrent in the other man’s voice and using it to calm her own annoyance. “I can see how you would feel that way, Mr. Sparrow, but I assure you that this is both vital and necessary. Some of the other commanders raise valid points: While the Alley Cats have done very well for themselves, so have the other ELH factions, and there are several of them that have as valid a claim to the mantle of the unit as ours. While we are the direct descendants, there are enough descendants of the rest of the unit to justify a certain amount of question as to who should step up.”

She took a deep breath. “Perhaps if my father were still alive, the situation would be a bit more cut-and-dried, but to be fair, some of them do raise important points.”

“I understand that, ma’am,” Sparrow replied, but clearly was not going to give up the point. “However, I do not understand why you feel the need to court all of them. Even if one or two of the other units join on, you will be able to make up their numbers with your own hiring efforts and the support that the First Prince will be giving you. We do not need to convert all of their hearts and minds.”

“Actually, we do.” Captain Alexa Neuman came around the corner, earning a wide grin from her husband. Turning to Amelia first, she nodded respectfully before composing her features back into a careful professional mask. “What I was saying, Mr. Sparrow, is the problem we face is the same one we have dealt with for more than a century: With the original ELH shattered into fragments, and with so many of those fragments having a valid claim to the mantle, it is imperative we do what we can to settle any concerns about our pedigree. Having two ELH units did not work for anyone in the past, and despite the support that either the Federated Suns or the Commonwealth might put forward, we need to convince the other Colonel players that we are a force to be reckoned with.
