She pushed her ’Mech’s throttle to maximum, and her Hankyu’s superior speed quickly distanced her from her pursuers. They were dangerous, but they lacked the raw speed of her Clan-built OmniMech.

This job had gone all kinds of wrong, far too fast for her to comprehend, and all that mattered now was fulfilling Colonel Jaffray’s final order. The rest would have to be dealt with later.

“Captain?” McHenry’s voice was shaky. Jessie had never heard the man lose his composure before. “Did we just leave Colonel Jaffray back there to die?”

“We did,” Jessie said. “As he ordered us to.”

“Roger that, Captain.” McHenry sounded defeated, and Jessie could not blame him. They were defeated. The Ghosts were defeated. And maybe all of Northwind with them.
