“The Mercantile Militia,” Marena corrected him.

“Aff. The Mercantile Militia simply does not have the resources or trained warriors to defend against these attacks. Doubly so if they become more frequent.”

“Do you know where these pirates were stationed?”

“Neg. We are working on it.”

“Do you know who these pirates were?”

Margolian’s jaw clenched tighter. “Neg.”

“Find out.”

“Aff, Syndic.” Margolian bowed and retrieved his data chip from the console on the desk. The holoprojector’s light faded, and the windows returned to their prior transparency.

Marena felt the embarrassment radiate from him. As much as she despised the way warriors ran things, she was sympathetic to their training. They had been inculcated by their Clan to be the best at everything they did. To have lost so thoroughly in the safety of their own nest felt just as shameful for Marena. She felt that vulnerability as well, and knew she had to either fledge or fall.

“Have faith, Star Captain. The Mercantile League will survive where the Jade Falcons have not.”

He nodded, unable to bring himself to speak.

“And, for what it is worth, I am deeply sorry for the loss of your warriors.”

“Thank you, Syndic.”

The elevator doors opened automatically as he approached. Marena watched him step into the elevator, looking so small in the distance. He turned to her once he stepped inside, and she saw the defeat on his face. The elevator doors closed and took him away.

Marena sighed.

Morale was low.

And if the Mercantile League could not defend its people, there would be no Mercantile League for long.

She had to come up with some answer to their problems. Some way to defend themselves against all the vultures coming to pick their bones clean.

There were plenty of options, but none were good.

The language she understood was money. But how could money give her an answer?

She only knew the solution was out there. Somewhere.
