Dimitri prepared their other drone while his mother and sister formulated an attack plan. Then they took positions to make their final stand. Dimitri had no doubt about that. As good as they were, they were boxed in and outnumbered at least seven to one.

He sat up on the left of the now-frozen wreck of the Dillinger when he heard a new sound: VTOL rotors.

Shit!

“They got reinforcements!” he shouted toward his mother and sister.

The he heard another sound. Laser fire.

What the hell?

He risked a peek around the destroyed vehicle and then, without thinking about it, opened fire on their distracted attackers, taking out two with clean headshots.

A Red Kite VTOL was hovering close by, firing into their enemies, killing them in droves before they could organize a counterattack. The undamaged Dillinger turned around to face it while the other one was obviously already disabled.

The VTOL took evasive action, but a few shots still hit it. It stopped firing and moved more erratically, pulling back to prepare for another attack.
