From his vantage point among the limbs of a huge oak, Dolf squinted through his enhanced binoculars, peering across the grassy plains. Hidden from view, he studied the figures of the Wolves taking over Fort DelVillar. He saw a slight breeze ruffle a new flag waving over the fort. It showed the growling head of a wolf in profile, announcing that the uncontested siege of the fort was over.

Dropping to the ground, he turned on his small portable communicator, then checked to make sure he had the right frequency. “Sweep Two to Command.”

“Go,” came the clear voice of Star Captain Bekker.

“Phase one complete. The Wolves are in the box.”

“Good. Tomorrow they will begin to hunt. When they do, we shall teach them to be careful what you search for—you might find it.”
