She flew awake before the door even snicked open. She pretended to be asleep as she rolled over, one hand beneath her pillow to touch the pistol. She lifted her eyelids just enough. The door was barely cracked open. Two pairs of eyes peered in at her.

“Didn’t your parents teach you it’s polite to knock first?” she asked.

A shriek emanated from the owner of the eyes that were closer to the floor, and small feet pounded away. But the other peeping Tom pushed the door open, revealing a gawky girl of thirteen or fourteen, not yet grown into the height her limbs suggested. Her wispy hair was the color of Sally’s; her eyes were mild like Gavin’s.

Nansa rolled back over and propped herself up on her elbows. “Can I help you?”

The girl shrugged in the casual way of teenagers pretending to be disinterested.

“All right,” Nansa said, throwing back the covers and reaching for her cargo pants. The girl’s eyes widened; she obviously hadn’t expected Nansa to ignore her and get dressed.

Nansa was lacing her boots when the girl finally spoke. “Are you a MechWarrior?”

It took all of Nansa’s concentration not to flinch. “No,” she said, focusing on her boot. “I’m a transport captain. Why?”

“I thought maybe you were here to help us.”

Nansa stood. “Sorry to disappoint you, Rude Girl.”

The corners of the girl’s mouth drooped. She started to turn away, but then she stopped and looked back. “My name’s Prue.”

“Nice to meet you, Prue. I’m Nansa.”
