Archer stood on a small pile of bricks that had been a wall, still wearing his lightweight jumpsuit and cooling vest as his infantry poured water onto the smoldering pile of debris. Soot stuck to his boots, and he looked gray where the material stuck to his sweaty skin.

The fighting for the Tyler Munitions Works had proven to be both fast and brutal. The Jade Falcons recovered from the shock of the blast much faster than his troops did. Both stars came out of the narrow alleys between the buildings, weapons blazing, firing everything they had before they could be downed. A Baboon 'Mech had somehow made its way to the roof of one building and rained down long-range missile fire at the Avengers. Then a pair of Goshawks lit into the air through the billowing smoke of the blast, weapons razing a lightweight Hollander.

His forces rallied quickly and finished the job they had begun. In the end, five Jade Falcons were captured, two of them knocked unconscious in their cockpits in the heat of the battle. Four of the buildings in the munitions works had been blown, burned, and blasted apart. Katya Chaffee's people had scoured the factory and found stockpiles of short-and long-range missile ammunition, but not as much as expected. Apparently, the Falcons had already been actively shipping the materials off-world, into the Inner Sphere.

That supply chain ended now. Archer was relieved but at the same time worried. They'd taken a planet back from the Falcons, a thrill he hadn't enjoyed since the Smoke Jaguars were defeated by the Star League Defense Force. At the same time, he was now behind enemy lines. He was working with Adam Steiner, a man who openly defied and disliked him. From this point forward, he knew he was risking waking a sleeping giant.

He only hoped Prince Victor had picked the right man for this job . . .
