Chapter 16

Saved by the buzz

Reeves felt the butt of a plasma rifle thump into his back and he was shoved inside a holding cell in Lone Water’s sheriff’s office. Major Kane was shunted into the cell moments later and the door was slammed shut. Reeves turned to face the New Earthers that had frog-marched him and Kane from the cave to the town and glowered at them with murderous eyes. However, at that moment he was still angrier at the stubborn computer system on-board the Invictus than he was at being apprehended by Serena Shepard’s thugs. Had it not been for the paranoid AI’s cynicism, they could have already been on their way back to Concord Station.

“I hope the accommodations are to your liking,” Serena Shepard said, stepping inside the sheriff’s office and locking eyes with Reeves through the cell bars. Resentment oozed out of her with every word, though from the cruel smile on her face the woman was clearly also enjoying having Reeves at her disposal.

“Go to hell, Shepard,” Reeves hit back. It was petty and petulant retort, but he was in no mood to play games. “If you’re going to kill us then just get it over with. If you’re looking for us to beg or plea for your amusement then you’re wasting your time.”

“Oh, don’t worry, Devil’s Blood,” Shepard hit back, stepping directly in front of the cell door, as if to demonstrate that she wasn’t afraid of Reeves or Kane. “I’ll get plenty of amusement from watching you die.”

“You tried to engineer my death once before,” said Reeves. “That didn’t work out quite as you planned, though, did it?”

The corner of Shepard’s mouth twisted up even further. “An error that will soon be rectified,” she said, smugly. “In fact, the Imperator is already on his way.”

Reeves snorted a laugh. “It seems that you and the Imperator have a good thing going on.” He stepped forward and gripped the bars to the side of the door. All six New Earther thugs aimed their weapons at him as he did so, but Reeves ignored them. “I knew it had to be about more than just revenge. They’re using you to set up outposts inside Bastion Federation Space, in return for helping the New Earthers recolonize Mars.” Reeves snorted again. “And yet you think I’m the one who’s a traitor to the human race.”

“Bastion is a lie, founded on the bones of millions of true humans who perished because of the Omega Taskforce,” Shepard spat, risking taking another pace toward Reeves. “Humanity ceased to exist when your ancestors destroyed Earth, and it won’t be restored until the true believers return home, to the solar system.”

“And once the Sa’Nerra rip through the six realms, you think the Imperator will just leave you alone to play happy families on Mars?” Reeves hit back. The zealotry and small-mindedness of Shepard and her New Earth cult staggered him. “The Sa’Nerra will wipe you out too, and finish what they began a millennia ago.
