Chapter 10

Some time in the future…

Earth was doomed. The Magog fleet entered Sol after destroying the remains of humanity’s last resistance fleet. Alex had lost, utterly. He had been defeated because it was impossible to win.

“Alex Reeves failed! We’re doomed!” says the news broadcasts. “May god have mercy on us all!”

The surviving Magog battleships came into Earth orbit, swooped down from the heavens, and rained nukes on all major Earth cities. Within hours, billions of human lives were lost.

Geneva, Switzerland was among the first cities to die. Three nukes exploded twelve miles above the surface - each nuke had the equivalent of 500 megatons of TNT. Nothing in the city survived. The massive High Command building which held the staff of humanity’s central military control was vaporized. The Twin Pillars of Peace and Coexistence, two gargantuan metal monuments that reached into the heavens - that symbolized the founding of the Human Federation - were blasted into dust. Nukes rained on all 30 million citizens of Geneva, killing 99% of the human population there within seconds.

Farms, industrial complexes, residential areas, corporate buildings, all were destroyed.

Next, the Queen’s residence, a massive palatial complex on the outskirts of New York City, was struck with laser fire and was reduced to rubble. The Queen herself, in her last moments, chose to stay in the palace, knowing that her end was near. Her last words was: “An end of an era is upon us. I do not want to live in the reality that will follow.”

Humanity was reduced to rubble. Humanity no longer had a means to resist. It had become… a servant species of the Magog Dominion. A farm race. A slave race meant for producing meat to feed Magog seedlings.

Yet… somewhere in the farmlands in Tribeca, a woman and her daughter watched as all nearby cities were crushed by the weight of nuclear weapons. This mother and daughter had vacated their lavish home in the city long ago, and chose to live with their relatives in the countryside. They were scared by the tremors and the mushroom clouds on the distant horizon. The explosions were even more blinding than the noonday sun.

“Mommy, why are there so many bright lights?” asked the daughter.

The mother was quiet. She tried to smile, to comfort her daughter, but it didn’t work. No matter how hard she tried, her face could not smile. “Don’t worry, Jesse. Daddy will protect us all.”

“Where is Daddy?”

“Daddy is in the stars, fighting the aliens.”

“Why are there black ships in the sky?”

“Because Daddy failed,” blurted the mother. She wept. Tears fell down her cheeks.

“Daddy failed?”

“Yes, Jesse. He tried his best, but he could not stop them. So he died trying.”

“Daddy is… is… dead?”

“Yes,” croaked the mother, weeping.

The daughter cried for many minutes. Finally, she said, “But if Daddy failed, what will happen to us?”

“We will run,” said the mother. “It will not be entirely safe anywhere, but we will try to find the safest places. We will try to stay alive. It is all we can do.
