Chapter 23

Logan

“No bacon?” Faith asked with disappointment.

Logan would find this bacon and bring it to her immediately. He never wanted to see that sad expression on her face ever again. She suffered enough in her young life. If it was up to him, she would never suffer again.

“I am sorry for your disappointment. I will speak with the chef.”

She lifted the covers over the platters. “It’s okay. They may not have bacon. Oh! They have pancakes!”

He watched as she piled round circular things called pancakes on her plate. She scooped up yellow things she named scrambled eggs. Her plate was overflowing with food. He was concerned that she may overwhelm her system.

“Should you eat all of that at one time?”

“I probably won’t be able to, but I just couldn’t stop myself from grabbing it.”

“Will this make you cry like the spa geti?”

She glared at him. “No. At least, I don’t think it will.” She sighed. “Honestly, I might cry again. If I do, just ignore me.”

“I would never ignore you,” he told her. She gave him a smile that lit up the room.

“You are so sweet.”

He sat across from her and loaded his plate. Logan was not sure about the floppy brown circular thing but would try it. He did like the spa geti. He didn’t eat right away, instead he enjoyed watching her eat.

She took a bite and closed her eyes. “Better than I remembered.”

Faith was eating her food in tiny careful bites, savoring every mouthful. She tried to use manners, though it was only the two of them and unnecessary. He was impressed that she tried, anyway. She glanced up at him several times, always glancing away when she saw him looking at her. Her cheeks pinkened. Was she sick?

“Where are the other guys?” Faith asked.

“They went to check on Warrior Marque. He’s supposed to be released today.”

“Oh. Should I sleep on the couch, so he has a bed to recuperate in?”

“No! There are two beds in the room with Powers and Lake. He will stay there and the other two will take turns keeping watch and resting.”

“What about your doctor guy? Where is he staying?”

“Medic Haggard has requested to stay with the human medics. They have small rooms with beds for their medics to use while on rotations. He wants to learn everything he can about your medicine and doctors.”

“It’s not my medicine. I’m from the subways, remember?”

“What is lifelike for you there?”

“Hard. But life for everyone after the nukes hit is hard. I have it better than a lot of other people, so I’m not complaining.”

“Why do you have it better?”

“My tribe. It’s smaller than most, so we can survive on less.”

Surviving on less was better? These people in tribes have had to settle for subpar amenities, food, medical treatment, and living conditions. Faith having to settle for just getting by was unacceptable.

“I can help your tribe.”

She hesitated lifting her fork to her mouth. “How?”

“I can order a shipment of supplies, food, clothing, and medicine delivered to your tribe within hours.
