Chapter 28

“She can’t really be that old, can she?” Brenda whispered softly into Mark’s ear as she snuggled as close as propriety would allow under the circumstances. Any true intimacy was not possible under these sleeping conditions, no matter how much Brenda might have wished it.

They were floating in a temporary anti-gravitation field that left them roughly eighteen inches off the floor of the deck inside the starship along with everyone else who had escaped the attacks alive. Sarina had called it a sleep net, and Brenda had to admit it was more comfortable than anything she’d ever experienced, even if it was a bit unsettling at first. She’d been certain she was going to drop to the floor for the first half an hour or so. She didn’t have any concept of how the net worked, but if she wanted to turn she could roll around just as if she was on a normal bed. Something detected her intent and hardened the air or field under her to allow motion. Once she stopped moving, the hardness faded and she was left floating weightless. Like the others she was wearing a pair of the ‘pajamas’ or whatever they were called that Doran had handed out when the sleeping arrangements were explained. They were somehow linked with the field that produced the zero gravity. Made of some synthetic, they were as soft and fluffy and unlike anything she’d ever worn. They also had the disconcerting ability to adapt to one’s size and movement. When she had been handed the pair she now wore, they were clearly far too large for her, but once she had them on they fit perfectly.

“I can’t see why Doran would make something like that up,” Mark said as his mind swirled with myriad thoughts he couldn’t put aside. “Besides, Sarina confirmed what he’d said, didn’t she?”

“She only said they lived a lot longer than we did. She didn’t give any specific duration. She might have been talking about ten years or so.”

Brenda was silent for a few moments, then she whispered in Mark’s ear again as another thought struck her.

“If they really are related to us, and Earth was really populated by some of her ancestors thousands of years ago, maybe that’s where the stories came from?”

“What are you talking about?” Mark asked, his mind not really tracking what Brenda was implying.

“In many of the world’s religions, there are claims that the original humans lived hundreds of years. I always thought that was nonsense when my mother read me those tales as a child. Maybe it is really true, and the long life ability did fade because some of the important foods weren’t viable on Earth. It sorta fits.”

“I can’t imagine a few foods making that kind of difference. If it is true they are that old, it’s probably because of their technology.”

“What we’ve seen is pretty impressive,” Brenda said. “Just what they can do with medicine. Doug said he’d seen the kind of wound Barb had before, and never knew anyone to survive it, yet she’s completely normal now.
