4.2.1.6 - Formatting Memory Cards

The memory cards, where digital camera images are archived, have space limitations and require some care in the Planning phase. I always suggest Formatting Memory Cards before using them in new jobs. Especially if you take RAW photographs, which quickly take up large amounts of memory. This format stores all original information captured by the camera sensor without compression or processing.

Starting a new job without Formatting Memory Cards can become a severe issue at Production time, as during the event, it will be difficult to delete photos of old events without compromising service progress. You may notice that the memory card is full only after you have captured some images in the current event. That is, there may be old photos along with new photos on the same card. Consider deleting them without deleting the current ones if the memory card becomes full. If you format the card, you will lose the photos that have been captured so far in the current event. And erasing only old ones doesn't seem like a simple task, especially in the middle of a job. The chances are high that you will make irreparable mistakes in this situation.

To avoid this kind of problem, always have enough formatted cards for all the work, not forgetting the reservation cards. Preferably, avoid huge capacity cards in order not to lose all photos if any of them have problems. Today's most sophisticated cameras have two memory card slots, allowing you to increase the availability of photos to be captured. It is also possible to copy them all to the other card automatically by the camera itself, which ensures higher security against photographs loss in case of malfunction of one of the cards.

Note:

Preferably format the memory cards you will use in the camera itself. It ensures formatting compatibility with your equipment. Avoid formatting them on your computer as you may use other formats that may not be appropriately recognized by the camera. They all have a command in their menu that allows you to perform this task safely. Look for your location in your camera manual.
