On Friday, the official list confirmed that Lieutenant Walker was wounded, and also that Lieutenant G. B. Bigland was wounded and missing.

Barrow Guardian, Saturday, 10 July 1915:

The uncertainty which prevailed in the district regarding the fate of Sec. Lieut. Bigland has been cleared up, his name appearing in the casualty list issued from General Headquarters, published on Wednesday, under the heading ‘Previously reported wounded and missing, now reported killed’.

Casualties at Guillemont

The south Lakeland area did not experience the same massive losses sustained by other towns such as Accrington on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. There seem to have been no local Pals Battalions, due to the low population density, and the Service Battalions of the King’s Own were either based in other theatres or did not see action on 1 July 1916. However, casualties in the 1st/4th Battalion were horrendous enough and the Battalion went on to sustain further casualties at Guillemont on 8 August 1916, when more than 100 men were killed. Some never got over their wounds from that day and died years later from the after-effects.
