Across the small encampment an old Wampeh woman approached a far younger man––at least by appearances, though he was much older than he appeared.

“Geist,” the old woman said.

“Farmatta.”

“I hear you have found a potential refuge should things go awry.”

“It would appear that way.”

“An undersea society. Fascinating.”

“Indeed,” he replied. “And your search? No sign of Malalia, I take it? Her Dominus fleet?”

“Sadly, no. And I’m sorry for that, truly. We will find her. It will just take time.”

“Which is wasting,” the Geist grumbled.

“You know as well as I, and better than most, that to rush into harm’s way without first knowing its true aspect is to court death.”

“One of the first lessons of the Ghalian,” he replied softly.

Farmatta assessed him a long moment, then pulled a small vial from within her clothing. “Drink this. Amazara extracted it from a particularly unique plant found on the cloud-covered world we visited. It will help.”

“What is it? A healing elixir? I am fine,” he said.

Farmatta looked at him calmly, and with a degree of sympathy. But also with the eyes of a Wampeh Ghalian master. “It was not a request, brother.”

Bawb turned and studied the deadly woman now offering him the little vial, and in that instant, he saw himself through her eyes. Realizing just how off he had been, and how it was very likely the masters had even discussed whether or not he might need to be put down.

It was not a pleasant realization, yet he knew he would have had the same conversation were he in their place.

Bawb nodded once and took the vial from her hand, uncorking it and downing the contents with a single gulp. Whether it was the mirror held up to his behavior or the healing powers of the elixir now coursing through his system, Bawb felt a little better. A little more in control.

He was still distraught, and his rage had not lessened in the slightest, but he was seeing things clearly, his faculties regained and under control. And that meant he could focus them on the task at hand: ending Malalia’s efforts and recovering his love in the process. And heaven help any who got in his way.
