Chapter Thirty-Five

The security staff at the front doors went wild when they saw Karasalia walking up to the entrance. To say they had feared for their lives when her father discovered she had gone missing was not hyperbole.

He wouldn’t harm his staff. Not normally, at least. But when his daughter was believed kidnapped again, and right out from under their noses––inside his own residence, no less? That was something that might push him over the edge. And that would not be good. Not at all.

“Hey, Shozzy. Hey, guys,” Kara greeted the familiar faces as she strolled in the doors.

A massive throng of guards was already swarming the entryway, forming a protective wall behind her, blocking any pursuers who might be chasing her from the outside.

“Guys? What are you doing?”

“Get inside, Denna Palmarian! We will protect you!” Shozzy said, his eyes rapidly scanning the grounds outside.

“Protect me? From what?”

“Your kidnappers. How did you manage to escape?”

“I wasn’t kidnapped. I was just visiting my uncle. Didn’t anyone get my note?”

The men looked at one another with panic in their eyes. If there’d been a note that would have explained the whole situation and they had somehow missed it, there would be hell to pay.

Of course, there was no such note, but Kara had concocted that twist to her story on the fly. She didn’t want the security detail to suffer for it, though, so she was going to quickly write one up and crumple it into her belongings, then act surprised and embarrassed that she had forgotten to leave it for them. It would likely draw some anger her way, but it was the right thing to do.

“Is my father in his offices?” she asked, walking to the lift disc.

“You do not know?”

“Know what?” she asked, concern growing, and quickly.

“Your father is in his chambers. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the visla has taken ill after the shock of your supposed kidnapping.”

Kara felt her adrenaline spike. Had she caused this? Without another word she activated the disc and flew to the top of the tower, rushing straight to his chambers.

“Father!” she exclaimed, seeing him lying in his bed, eyes closed and his skin much paler than usual.

He did not wake, nor did he even stir. Her heart rate spiked, a crackle of power flickering from her chest to her fingertips as the surge of panic took hold.

That was new, she realized, shocked at her own magical growth.

“Father, can you hear me?”

“Kara! You’re home! And safe!” Mareh gushed, rushing into the room. “The guards told me you were back. Oh, darling, where have you been? Your father was worried sick!”

“What happened, Mareh? Why is he not waking up?”

“I don’t know what it is, dear. He was beside himself when he returned home and found you missing. It was all I could do to keep him from tearing the city to pieces, he was so enraged.”

“But he’s so weak.”

“I know. It’s the weakest I’ve ever seen him, and I haven’t a clue what to do about it.
