Chapter Thirty-Eight

Rika had taken a cautious approach, Jo sitting beside her with her hands on the weapons controls, ready to fire should any hostile actions require it. But all appeared to be calm down below.

What they saw as they circled the area was simply Eddie parked in another clearing. As before, the local vegetation had been uprooted, but there was something else this time. Signs of a fight.

“Keep your eyes peeled,” Rika said as she set the ship down and slid her most powerful konus, the one gifted her by Bawb not so long ago, onto her wrist. “Come on.”

The pair stepped out of the Fujin and joined their friends as they surveyed the area. The atmosphere was quite breathable, and with all of the vegetation of this world, the air was exceptionally refreshing. And there was something more to it, it seemed. Something they couldn’t quite place.

Hunze, on the other hand, seemed abuzz with excitement as she picked up the remnants of plants left scattered around the landing zone.

“What’s she doing?” Rika quietly asked Leila. “She’s sniffing them.”

“She’s an Ootaki,” Leila replied. “Her kind not only produce power, but are also sensitive to certain types. And here, on this weird world, she smells magic.”

“Magic? I don’t feel it?”

“You’re human. From this galaxy. Your body’s systems are different than ours,” the olive-skinned woman replied.

Hunze padded across the upturned ground to her friends. “This is unlike any magic I’ve ever felt,” she said, clearly agitated. “And there’s a lot of it in some of these plants. Like, they absorb the power from the sun and convert it to this magical energy.”

“Kind of like your hair or Ara’s skin,” Ripley noted.

“Yes,” the golden-haired woman replied. “But this is strong. And dangerous.”

“Dangerous? Why do you say that?”

“Something feels wrong about it,” Hunze replied.

Jo walked over to a chopped-up shrub and picked up the remains. “Why are they tearing up the plants, then?”

“Because there is power here, don’t you see?” Hunze said, on edge. “They appear to be attempting to gather a new source of power. One they can harvest.”

“To what end, though?” Jo wondered.

“It is only a guess,” Hunze said, “but I think they are trying to gather enough power to retrieve the portal from the sun.”

“But you said this magic was dangerous.”

“Yes, but maybe they think it’s worth it for a one-time spell.”

“Uh, guys?” Ripley said, concern in her voice. “You need to see this.”

The others quickly made their way to her side. What had caught her attention was a pool of green on the ground.

“Is that Tslavar blood?” Hunze asked.

“From personal experience, I can definitely confirm that,” Rika replied. She’d slain her fair share of Tslavars in the not-so-distant past. And someone had done the same here. Recently, by the look of it.

“I see signs of a hasty retreat,” she noted, scanning the bootprints on the ground.

Rika followed the tracks, pools of drying green blood spattering the ground as the gravely injured aliens fled back to their ship.

“Here. They boarded here,” she said, pointing to where all tracks ceased.
