Chapter Eleven
Emma
An elephant of enormous proportions filled my bedroom. In fact, there was more than one. They crowded the air, and took the comfort I found in Logan’s embrace and crumpled it like trash on the floor beneath their massive feet.
If we didn’t talk about the elephants soon, I was sure my brain would eat away at itself with worry and confusion. Both topics that needed to be discussed were hard to broach—the secret chamber I’d found and our evolving relationship.
I loved the games we were playing, the lessons he was teaching me. Enjoyed how we were exploring sensuality in exhilarating different ways. How being here in this time, this castle, and especially with Logan, had changed me. I liked the way I was. The way I was growing, the person I was becoming. I enjoyed it. Truly.
So, why then, did I have to fuck it up?
Talking would ruin the peaceful moment we were sharing, limbs entwined, soft caresses and sweet quiet.
Why did I have to get all emotional and put a name to what we had and go directly against Logan’s wishes? There wasn’t supposed to be more to us than this. Yeah, sure, no contract was signed, but it was spelled out carefully. Lovers. Nothing more, and no less.
But it felt different—this thing between us. I knew it was different. Just like I was.
I guess defining what we were to each other just went with the territory. I was changing, and in changing I had to be sure of what and who I was, and where I was, and my place here. Especially with Logan. I was completely and utterly in love with him. Wholly obsessed with him. A sweet obsession. One I never wanted to be rid of, and yet I knew it couldn’t last if I let these elephants keep stomping around. My confidence in myself as a woman was nearly whole. I’d bared myself to Logan—mostly. And I was ready to take that plunge, to flay myself wide open, if he was willing to do it with me.
Logan lay beside me, his breathing calmed in the aftermath of our encounter. His chest rose and fell, and I swirled my fingers in the crisp hair covering his muscled pecs. “Logan?” My voice came out sounding timid, exactly the opposite of how I wanted. I flicked my gaze up to study his chiseled profile.
“Aye?” His tone was guarded, and he stiffened slightly beside me, but his expression didn’t change.
I bit my lip contemplating how to reply. The man knew me well, and he could most likely gauge what I was going to ask, or maybe at least had an idea.
“What was down there?”
His hand around my back tightened, and the muscle in his jaw clenched for half a second. “Down where?”
Already I wanted to pull the words back. This conversation was doomed to be unpleasant. Logan was withdrawn naturally and even with the closeness we’d developed I’d not been able to crack his mortar shell. I closed
