It Does Not Have to Be Boring
Often, my clients fear exercising (âI donât want to be the heaviest one in the class!â), feel intimidated by exercising (âI donât know what to do with all those machines at the gym!â), or have a warped attitude about exercising (âWorking out is for shallow, ditzy bimbos. I have better things to do with my timeâ). And at first, almost all of my clients believe that exercising is going to be âsooo boring.â
But it doesnât have to be! Case in point:
While leading a BARE retreat for eight clients in New York City, I told the ladies that I had a special surprise up my sleeve.
âOoh, what?â they all wanted to know.
Ohhhhh lord. They had no idea what was coming.
âDo any of you ladies like . . . Beyoncé?â I asked, already knowing the answer. This was basically an eight-woman army of Beyoncé super-fans.
Lots of nodding and curious raised eyebrows followed.
âWell, weâve been invited to take a private dance class at . . .ââpause for dramatic effectââBeyoncéâs rehearsal studio.â
The squeals of glee were deafening.
We changed into tank tops and stretchy pants and cavorted over to the studio. A gorgeous choreographer named Robert Hartwell greeted us there with a huge smile. It was a stunning spaceâfloor-to-ceiling windows with a view of the city, tons of natural light, exposed brick walls, and a ballet barre stretching from one side to the other.
âIs this the floor that Beyoncé dances on, like, for real?â I asked, feeling like a twelve-year-old girl. Robert nodded. I almost kissed the floor.
After taking approximately a million selfies and posting multiple videos on Facebook, the class began. Robert designed a routine that was perfect for beginnersânot too complicated, not too fast, but totally fun and sexyâand within thirty minutes or so, we were all strutting, posing, and shimmying to the beat like professional backup dancers. (Beyoncé, if youâre hiring, call us!)
All of my clients were beaming and grinning the entire time. We all broke a sweatâbut nobody really felt like they were âexercising.â We werenât âworking outââwe were LIVING A DREAM!
After toweling off and hugging Robert, we went back to the hotel to gush and discuss the class. Everyone agreed that it was one of the best experiences of the whole retreat, maybe even the whole year.
âI honestly didnât realize that exercise could be that much fun!â one client exclaimed.
Yes, maâam. It sure can.
Maybe you wonât have the chance to dance in Beyoncéâs studio every single day of your life (if only!), but you can findâor createâyour own personal version of âdancing in Beyoncéâs studioâ in your own hometown. You can create that same level of âOMG THIS IS FUN!â excitement even if you live far, far away from the bright lights of NYC.
Maybe typical gym workouts bore you, and thatâs fine. If thatâs the case, skip the gym. Choose something else that feels more fun.
You donât have to settle for âboring fitnessâ when there are so many options out there. Choose something that makes you feel like youâre heading to Beyoncé HQ.
