Chapter Ten

It seemed miraculous that Fletcher Baxter waited precisely where he’d said he would. He looked like something out of a dream, stationed there on the harbor docks in a white t-shirt and a pair of dark jeans, his hands shoved in his pockets and the breeze off Frenchman Bay fluttering through his dark hair. Angie’s heart literally skipped a beat, maybe two.

Wait. Did I just sign my divorce papers?

Did I actually take that leap?

“Hi,” she heard herself say, praying it sounded cool and easy— not like a woman fresh in the dating pool.

“Hello, Ang.” He said the nickname so easily, as though they’d known one another for years. He placed his hand on her shoulder and dropped his lips over her cheek, greeting her like a European in a film.

It was nearly eight. Although Angie hadn’t eaten anything more than a few cheese-flavored chips from the dollar store, she’d lost all connection with her body and could hardly remember the concept of hunger. If Fletcher had suggested a seven-course meal, however, she’d have eaten it. She’d have done anything.

“I thought we might go for a sail,” Fletcher said instead.

Angie’s lips parted in surprise. Her eyes scanned across the frothing waves of Frenchman Bay, which eased out into the mighty Atlantic. Often, she thought about that wide expanse and the next patch of earth— miles and miles across nothingness.

“Unless sailing isn’t your thing?” he asked.

In truth, Angie wasn’t entirely sure it was. Luke had taken her out on his boat several afternoons, each time showing her the literal ropes and how to manipulate the sails. Each time, she’d felt her fear lessening. That didn’t mean it would ever go away.

“The ocean is…” She trailed off, no longer capable of words.

“I think it’s incorrect to ever lose fear of the ocean,” Fletcher told her, cocking his head in that familiar way of his. “More than eighty percent of the ocean has never been explored by humans. We have no inkling of what goes on down there.”

“You’re not making it any easier for me to step out on that boat,” Angie joked, her smile widening.

But here, Fletcher stretched out a strong hand, his eyes glittering. “Come on, Ang. Don’t you trust me?”

Angie wasn’t sure why she did. She felt herself lift one foot after another as she followed him closer and closer to the water’s edge and then out onto the furthest dock, where Fletcher’s friend’s boat was tied up.

“He lets me take it out whenever I’m in the area,” Fletcher explained. “We have a pretty long history of sailing together. There’s a lot of trust there.”

“He’s here in Bar Harbor?” Angie asked.

“A bit outside,” Fletcher explained. “He keeps to himself. Kind of a hermit. Although, I can’t say I blame him. As I get older, I find myself retreating more and more from human society. I watch the way people behave and the way people abuse their friends and family members and think to myself, do I really want to be involved in a world like this?”

Angie’s heart lifted.
