Catchup and Connections

After providing Dolly with some Banana Nut Donuts and some words of wisdom for surviving a breakup, Heather and Amy decided who else they could speak to at the retirement home.

Ryan had called and given her a brief update. Joy’s piggy bank had revealed no fingerprints. It had been wiped clean, but it wasn’t clear whether the thief had done this to cover up his crime or if housekeeping had done a thorough job cleaning. He said that the medical examiner was still working on his report for the cause of death. Heather had asked about this because usually the Key West medical examiner worked rather quickly. Ryan had said there was apparently some sort of complication, but that he didn’t know what it was. Finally, Ryan had said that after looking into Grant Jenkins’s life, there appeared to be no motive for someone to kill him. There was also no influx of cash that would make it look as if he was the thief.

Ryan and Heather agreed that it looked even more likely that the gardener was killed because of something that he witnessed.

“Play bingo? Sit with our toes in the sand? Watch a black and white movie?” asked Amy.

“Huh?” asked Heather, coming out of her reverie.

“I was asking what we should do here,” her friend said with a knowing smile.

“Sorry,” said Heather. “I guess I got lost in thought. I was thinking how the necklace being found in the garden could have been what Mr. Jenkins saw. Maybe he recognized it as Dolly’s or just knew that it was unlikely that it belonged to the person who was holding it.”

“He might have seen the crime in action too,” said Amy. “Maybe the killer dropped the necklace when making his getaway.”

“That’s assuming that the thief broke into Dolly’s room while she was at breakfast and left with the necklace. Then, he killed Mr. Jenkins so he couldn’t be identified. No one realized that the gardener was dead because they assumed he was working outside. Then, Dolly noticed her jewelry and money was missing and called Vernon over. Then, we arrived to talk to Joy and see the body.”

Amy wrinkled her nose. “That timeline does work if the robber was someone besides Vernon Valentino.”

Heather nodded. “If Vernon is the thief, he must have taken the jewelry and money when he was in Dolly’s room, and she would have noticed it the next day. Vernon would have had to go out of his way to kill Grant Jenkins. And he would have had to do it before he made it to Dolly’s room because she made it sound as if she didn’t let him out of her grasp once he arrived.”

“Well,” Amy said. “Then, it sounds like there’s a chance that Vernon isn’t guilty. I’m glad for Vincent’s sake.”

“Though it is still quite a coincidence that Vernon dated all the women who were robbed,” said Heather.

“Well, except for Joy,” Amy pointed out.

“That’s right.” Heather frowned. If Vernon Valentino wasn’t
