An early winter chill was in the air. The green, orange and yellow kaleidoscope of colors which clothed the trees all fall was slowly dying off, leaving pointed naked branches waiting for snow time. Everything seemed to be coming early for the year, and time seemed to be passing by too quickly. Chico feared that the early cold was a warning from the man upstairs of his wrath, which was also coming quickly. He wasn’t worried about Hell. To him, Hellfire fables were just like tricks, which were for kids. But he did fear that all his whack deeds would come back on him. That fear was also in the air, and no matter how hard he tried to squash the morbid thoughts, they played on his mind like a bad movie.

He had set some time aside to spend with Candy, but she seemed to be in one of her “tell me everything that’s on your mind” moods. His shawty sure as hell didn’t want to know what was on his mind. Although they were supposed to be studying together, Candy seemed to be more preoccupied with staring him down as if she were ready to rumble. He ignored her best he could until she jumped up, placed her hands on her hips and shouted his name.

“Chico!”

He looked up from his notebook. “What?”

“I don’t know why you’re playing me like this. Why you’re trying to act like nothing’s wrong, and you know damn well there’s a hella lot wrong!”

“What are you talking about?” asked Chico as he looked at her blankly.

Candy growled. “What am I talking about? What am I talking about! Chico, look at you, you have barely said two words since you got here. Normally I can never shut you up. I mean are you upset with me for some reason? Is there something going on with you that you haven’t told me? Is there another girl?”

“Lawd . . . Where is this shit coming from? Now it’s another girl, huh?” He shut his notebook.

“It’s coming from my heart, and you ain’t hearing my heart no more, Chico.” She gave him a pleading look. “That’s one of the things I used to love so much about you. You saw me, heard me. Now you don’t even seem to wanna be with me no more.”

“How you figure that?”

“Chico, we are never . . . together . . . anymore! You’re always too busy. You always have something better to do. So what else am I to think but that there’s another girl? Outside of all the stuff I’ve been hearing about you. You’re always in Highland Park and never with me. So who you messin’ with, huh?” Candy asked accusingly.

Chico looked in Candy’s eyes for a minute, saying nothing. He then got up and slowly began putting his Nikes on, grabbed his books and keys and headed for the door.

“Where are you going?!” cried Candy.

“I’m getting outta here. I’m not gonna sit and listen to this bullshit. Listen, if
