An Evolving Garden

Construction of the Bali Hyatt began in the early 1970s on a 36-acre former coconut plantation facing the sea, one of the prime locations at the island's oldest beach resort. From the beginning, the designers determined that landscape would be a central feature, occupying 75 per cent of the total area and utilising huge planter boxes, jungle-like courtyards and water gardens to further soften and in places almost obscure the deliberately simple lines of the modern, low-rise guest wings built around courts. One of the architects, Kerry Hill of Australia, explained the objective as "a dramatic celebration with the garden almost threatening the open spaces in the architecture".
