BAILEY

I fret about my not-date with Nikko all week.

I mean, it’s not a date. It’s just Nikko cooking me dinner because that’s just what he does. And it’s at his place, because where else would we go?

On the other hand, it’s him cooking me dinner at his place, which is an awful lot like a date.

For the first time since high school, I experiment with make-up and even wear lipstick and eyeliner to my shift at the Cantina. Bill trips over himself complimenting my attempts—I think he’s hoping I’ll gussy myself up more for our customers—but I feel self-conscious and overdone.

I dig through my closet, but the only dressy thing I have is the black suit I bought for Granddad’s funeral. Even if it were appropriate for my not-date, it makes me sad just to look at it, and I stuff it as far back into the closet as it will go.

To make things extra stressful, I lose sleep watching his appearance on the Late Show and take on as much work as I can, working five nights in a row at the Cantina and trading shifts at the cafe with Lucky when she goes out of town with Anthony to an audition. I figure if I work as much as I can this week, I can justify taking most of next week off and spending it with Nikko.

So I can show him around all the farms and food producers here, of course.

Who am I kidding? I just want to spend time with him. The memory of that one kiss lingers, making my lips tingle every time I think about it. If Nikko’s willing—and that kiss made me think he is—I want to squeeze every last minute of time that I can with him.

Finally, I realize I need help. Joyce always looks cute, but she gets most of her clothes at vintage and second-hand shops, and I don’t want to put a lot of time into looking for something. My weird height makes it hard to find clothes anyway. Lucky’s taste runs toward the short and tight, and although I know she means well, she tends to be a little bossy. Anyway, she’s out of town.

So I beg Blaze to go shopping with me.

Blaze is not a small girl, and I know that, like me, she sometimes has trouble finding clothes for her size. Somehow, though, she’s always dressed perfectly, whether it’s for work, for an afternoon at the lake, or for drinks at the Cantina. I have a vague fantasy of impressing Nikko by showing up looking sophisticated and elegant, like the models he dates in New York. I know it’s impossible, of course, but pretty much anything will be a step up from my cut-off shorts and t-shirts.

Blaze agrees to help with so much enthusiasm that I wonder if she’s been waiting for me to ask. She tells me about a boutique in North Falls that specializes in clothes for women of “uncommon” shapes (I would have said
