Jeff was still in the grip of the previous night’s libations, a condition that I could easily identify with. He sat heavily on the end of my bed, stared at me with wide eyes, and related some of the details of his prior evening. He had gone out into the cold December night with several companions, including Anthony. They had eventually found themselves at a bar about a mile away from the hotel where they had been befriended, as Jeff repeated emphatically several times with wide eyes, by “gangsters and pimps and prostitutes.” Eventually he had left the party and had managed to navigate himself back to the hotel and then up to my room, which apparently was now our room. He had no idea where Anthony was, or even if he was still alive. I yawned, stretched, and stated that if anyone could successfully navigate a sketchy evening in the Soviet capital it was our leader.
