The next morning, in the safest place on earth, Marlee had absolutely no problem getting his room number out of the front desk clerk. She probably could have gotten the key if she’d asked for it!

Her heart beating unreasonably, she found her way to his room.

Except it wasn’t exactly a room. Matteo’s villa made her tiny cabana look like a shoebox. She suddenly didn’t feel at all as confident that she knew what anybody needed. She had deliberately dressed casually—shorts, sandals, a white shirt—but now she wished she’d given in to the temptation to buy a second sundress from the resort boutique.

Too late for doubts! She took a deep breath.

She knocked on the door. Again, Marlee gave herself the same advice she’d given Fiona.

Be brave.

Think about what he needed, not what she needed.

The door swung open and Matteo stood there.

A towel was wrapped around his waist.

She totally forgot about what he needed, or what she needed.

“Do you open your door like that in Switzerland?” she croaked.

“Like what?”

“With no clothes on.”

He glanced down at himself. He looked at her, and a small smile tickled his lips at her discomfort.

“You’ve seen me in my swim shorts,” he said. “I don’t think this is any less modest.”

“Um...”

“Unless,” he said wickedly, “there was a wardrobe malfunction.”

She gulped.

He laughed. “What gives me the pleasure this morning?”

A reminder that last night he had been sorry about the confidences he had shared with her, sorry he had shown her his poor, bruised heart.

It came back to her why she was here.

To rescue him, the man who had everything, from his self-imposed prison of loneliness.

She waved a bottle of white nail polish at him. “Fiona wants some modification to the design. Can I come in? I have a picture.”

He hesitated, and then with a slight bow, he held the door open to her.

Surrender.

Marlee stepped by him and his shower-fresh scent tickled her nostrils. She was aware of the perfect, deep carve of his chest and how utterly and beautifully masculine he was. She remembered the accidental touches of her fingers on his naked skin when they had swum together.

They were alone in his villa. The potential for danger—of the most delicious kind—seemed high.

But then she came to a full stop. Her mouth fell open as her eyes adjusted from the bright light outside to the dimmer interior of the villa.

The ceilings soared. The couches were white leather. If she sat on one in her white shirt, she would disappear!

The rest of the furniture was rich, subdued and sophisticated. The huge abstract art pieces were gorgeous. The rugs were, no doubt, priceless. A bouquet of island-bright fresh flowers was in a huge vase in the center of a coffee table.

In her cabana, she had gotten a free cigar and a travel-size bottle of rum. The rich and famous got baby-elephant-size bouquets of flowers.

A whole wall was covered in windows that looked out to a pool. A waterfall cascaded off one end of it. Its marble decks were scattered with huge wicker furniture baskets—giant eggs—with bright pillows inside them.
