ADELINE
Iâm still trying to wake up, and wishing Iâd brought a travel mug filled with coffee when I pull up outside Carlâs ranch just before six.
âSo, did youâll tell Carl weâre getting married in Lonoke on Friday?â I ask.
Eric gives me a wry smile as he unbuckles his own seat belt. âThatâs the plan. And you talk to Fiona and the lawyer.â
I nod and worry my lip as I try to figure out how to say goodbye.
Since Carl isnât waiting, and no one is about, Iâm not sure if I should kiss Eric just in case, so I take my seat belt off but stay behind the wheel.
When he moves to get out, I react without thinking and lean closer to him. His eyebrows hitch but he doesnât miss a beat, just wraps one hand around the back of my neck and presses his mouth to mine.
Shivers travel down my spine as his fingers caress the base of my neck. I release the tiniest of whimpers as he pulls back and chuckles. âSee you at lunchtime.â
As he climbs out, I release a sigh and fasten my seatbelt as he ambles through the gates.
No longer sure if I kissed him for practice or in case anyone was watching, I spin the wheel and head back to the highway, thoughts tangled as I plan out the rest of my morning.
To keep me from thinking about why I kissed him, I switch on the stereo and tap my wheel in time to the music coming out of the speakers.
Love song after love song comes on, making it even more impossible not to think about Eric, so I switch it off and drive in silence.
When I arrive back in town, Iâm so wound up, and so tired from a terrible nightâs sleep, all I can think about doing is crawling back into bed and taking a nap.
I drive into the parking lot and yawn as I put the car in park. I need to call the lease company and find out if I can keep it, and maybe just change the agreement and payments over.
Itâs still too early to call the lawyer, so I climb out of my car and lock it before I walk towards the apartment building.
I push open the door to the foyer and yawn as I stumble up the stairs, bleary-eyed and grateful I can sleep for a while before calling Trish.
When I reach my apartment, I belatedly realize I forgot to check my mail. Too tired to go back downstairs I lock the door and kick off my sneakers and head back towards my bedroom.
Itâs a little unnerving to see the other side of the bed messed up and to see Ericâs bag on the floor, but that and everything else thatâs making me lose sleep will have to be dealt with before next week.
I slip my jeans off, put my glasses and phone beside me, slide under the covers, close my eyes, and tuck the covers under my chin.
