After they had dropped Joe at the airport the next day, Maeve went to the guest room and collected the sheets. She remembered it gave her a queasy feeling when she saw what he’d left behind: one dirty white tube sock with a band of orange at the top, orange capping the toes. She felt insulted, or disrespected, as if it were a condom. She pictured him standing in tall grass, wearing one sock. She put the sock in the trash can out in the garage. Then cleaned the room, sprayed its surfaces with bleach.

Soon Paige left too. That whole summer, after Paige left, Maeve hadn’t been herself. Jack noted it. Her friend Zoë sent her a concerned email. Jack wondered if she needed a doctor—­a therapist. He had a name, someone his colleague’s sister recommended. That’s not my style, Maeve said. She hated the idea of speaking directly to someone about her life. A stranger, sniffing around, finding sorrows, naming flaws. No thank you.
