Chapter 42

Spring Hill, Florida

Sunday, May 5, 6:15 AM

“Let’s get this parade moving,” Jason said into his hand-held radio. He started the Dodge Challenger and listened to the roar of the big engine. Slipping the transmission into first gear, he led the way out of his subdivision. Followed by the other five muscle cars, nine military Humvees, and three six-wheel heavy trucks, they looked like an army headed for war. Which in fairness, was exactly what they were. The sun wouldn’t be up fully for another fifteen minutes, but the eastern sky was pink in the pre-dawn, and there was plenty of light to maneuver through James’ obstacle course barricades, travelling without headlights.

“We’re really doing this,” Jenna said, riding shotgun. She reached over and touched his arm. Jason thought about it. Was this really necessary? Couldn’t they just hide here and hope for the best? People who he loved were going to be injured and killed in the next two days. Then he sighed.

“Yeah, Jenna,” he said. “We have to do it, regardless of the cost. Mackey is as weak right now as he’ll ever be, and those girls up there will die if we don’t save them.”

Jenna scooted closer on the bench seat. She glanced at the rear, where Sarah and Erica were snoring softly.

“Wars and battles should be fought by old men,” she said. “Didn’t someone famous say that?”

“A French writer named Jean Giraudoux,” Jason replied. “He said that by sending its youth to war, a country dies.”

“So are we wrong, doing this with teenagers like Sarah and Erica and the others?” Jenna asked. Jason shook his head in frustration.

“I don’t know what to say,” he replied. “I didn’t plan this, it just happened. This group came together and we’re fighting because there’s nobody else to do it.”

“Maybe it does make sense, Jason,” Jenna said. “I mean, our world ended last year, and whatever this new world is, will be theirs. They have a right to shape it.”

“I don’t know,” Jason said. “I really don’t.”

“Well, I know one thing,” she said. “They can’t do it without you. That’s your job whether you like it or not.”

As the convoy pulled through Crystal River, the streets were empty, even though they knew people were there. They had learned to hide. As their vehicles passed the scene of the battle, and the destroyed fast food restaurants, three survivors, a man and two women, saw their vehicles and all the black uniforms. They ran forward, shouting “Marauders!” Sarah and Erica, now awake, leaned to the open window of the Challenger and flashed thumbs up gestures to the people, as the convoy rolled on.

“They know us!” Erica said. “Did you see that?”

By the time they reached Chiefland, there were small crowds waiting, in groups of three or four. They watched the line of vehicles roll through their town, all of them with a fist raised in the air.

“They must have some way of communicating,” Jason said. “Probably short wave.”

“I don’t think they’re going to turn us in,” Jenna said.
