Clark had an uneasy feeling, and it wasn’t just about the scene at Lauren Caufman’s apartment. The mess and the blood had him concerned, but it wasn’t just that...

When he and Renae had gotten back into his SUV, she reached across that console again and asked him to call his aunt, to check in on the kids. And for a second, he’d imagined that the kids were theirs, that they were a couple out on a date with a babysitter at home.

But that wasn’t the situation at all. His aunt reminded him of that the moment she answered his call, which he’d regrettably put on speaker so that Renae could hear her, too.

“Clark, I have things to do. You’re going to have to find a real babysitter. I can’t cart two kids around on my errands with a trooper following me. Why is there a trooper parked outside, anyway? What’s going on?”

He wished he knew, wished he could figure this all out. “Aunt Kelly, I appreciate you pitching in, and I am working on finding another sitter. The trooper is just keeping an eye on things because last night there was a break-in nearby.”

He’d only requested drive-by surveillance until he’d found that door open at Lauren Caufman’s. Then he’d called in on his radio, and requested the trooper just stay parked outside his house until he knew if there had been another victim. Maybe someone had thought Lauren knew something about Ella’s murder, like who had murdered her. Or maybe Ella had been murdered because of whatever she’d found out about the Caufmans, whatever she’d alluded to when she spoke with Hank Chester. If he’d been telling the truth...

“This place is Fort Knox,” Aunt Kelly remarked. “Nobody’s breaking in here. And with that trooper outside, I feel like I can’t break out. I retired from teaching for a reason, Clark. It used up all my patience for kids, which is why I never had any of my own. If it weren’t for Sierra, this baby wouldn’t stop crying.”

Renae emitted a soft gasp, and her hand went over her heart, as if it ached for the little boy. She definitely cared about him. But then, if she didn’t like kids, she probably wouldn’t do what she did for a living.

A twinge of sympathy for the infant struck Clark’s heart, too. The poor kid had to miss his mom. After talking to people about Ella, it was clear that she was all the baby had had. She was the only one who’d cared about him.

No. Not the only one.

Renae cared too. She’d investigated that complaint about Ella neglecting him and found evidence that exactly the opposite was true. And when Ella had called for help, Renae had rushed to do just that. She was very good, and not just at her job. She was a good person.

“Clark? Are you there?” His aunt’s voice emanated from the cell.

He’d let thoughts of Renae distract him, and right now, with the danger she and the baby were in, he couldn’t afford any distractions.
