Not for the first time since we've sat down, I wonder why we’re going through this. When Karen came into my office earlier, she said that she had something that she wanted to talk to Dad and me about—that it was important. I would have thrown her out of my office and told her to return to work, but Karen said that Dad and I needed to hear some news from her and Clive. She wanted us to have dinner with them.

I know she was hankering to have dinner with us at my house because she pouted when I told her I would meet her at a nearby restaurant. She knows by now that I’m not going to pay for her meal, and the only way to get a free dinner is to have it at home. For someone who loves money, she sure hates to spend it.

But I’m not about to have her in the house. While she still works for my company, although she doesn’t seem to do much these days, I haven’t forgiven her for lying to us about her relationship with her husband and attempting to stick me with the bill.

Dad has said plenty of times on the way over that we’re mad for doing this, and I agree. But I have to admit that my curiosity is piqued. Is this an apology? Are Karen and Clive going to sort things out between us? I might be able to get along with them if we can, although I won’t forget how they hurt Eve and left Jamie without a father. They’re both fools, as far as I’m concerned.

Dinner is mostly quiet until we’re halfway done with our meals, Karen and Clive glancing at each other while Dad munches away on his burger. The man does love his food, and it is delicious. But I have a knot in my stomach over the financial worry at the office and knowing that Eve is unwell. She seemed so fragile, and I didn’t want to leave her. But as soon as Jamie walked into the room, I felt like a teenager being caught doing something I shouldn’t.

He could look after his mother for now. Besides, Eve is tough. She probably wouldn’t appreciate me hovering over her. I like that about her.

Maybe her being sick is a good thing after all. I am not making a move on her when she’s not well. I’m not that cruel.

Although I wish I had kissed her before I left. I find myself missing that.

“Ethan, I’ve got something important to tell you.” Karen swallows her piece of chicken and lowers her knife and fork. “I’m going to be handing in my notice in the near future. I’m not sure when but in the next few months.”

“What?” I frown at her. “Is there a reason? Aside from the obvious?”

Karen wrinkles her nose.

“If you mean what I think you mean, then no. It’s for another reason entirely.” She puts her hand over Clive’s. “I’m pregnant. We’re going to be having a baby.
