âHey, new guy!â Megs kisses Oliver when we arrive at the bar, leaving a flaming red lipstick mark on his cheek.
âHi,â I say, wiping it off with my thumb after I give him a quick hug. âSorry weâre late, it took forever to catch a cab.â
âNo problem, I took the liberty of ordering you a drink,â he gestures at the table where two Martinis lie in wait.
âDirty, just the way I like it,â Megan croons, swooping herâs up and taking a huge slug.
âWhy am I not surprised?â Oliver grins. Megs waggles her eyebrows at him. Megan has always been a flirt, but for the first time, I find myself a little irritated by it. Throughout the evening she never misses an opportunity to lay her red-taloned hands on Oliver, giggling at his jokes and giving him long lingering eye-meets.
As a result of their endless conversation, I drink more than either of them. Listeners always drink more, I think stupidly, my head buzzing as I raise my hand at the nearest waiter and signal for a refill.
âMaybe you should take it easy?â Oliver murmurs, his eyes meeting mine.
âWhat are you, my mother?â I chuckle, pushing his shoulder and almost unseating myself.
âEmmaâs a big girl,â Megan interjects, drawing Oliverâs attention back to herself.
âI guess,â he shrugs, turning away, but I am all too conscious of his concerned glances back at me.
âIâm going to dance,â I announce, feeling a little embarrassed. I have had far too much to drink. The stress of these past few weeks is catching up with me. Swaying, I move toward the pulsating dance floor, which is filled with shiny, beautiful people. Oliver and Megan join me a moment later, and we form a crude triangle, laughing and spinning as we move in time to the up-tempo music.
Oliver takes it in turns to spin us, his hands remarkably steady. Megan is writhing around him, rubbing her body against his and lifting her arms above her head in that sexy, slutty way that Iâve never been able to master. My moves are far less coordinated, but I shuffle around like a baby elephant, having just as much of a good time. Most surprising is the fact that Oliver is not responding to Meganâs advances. In fact, he deliberately moves closer to me, raising his eyebrows in fear. I stifle a laugh as I step closer to murmur in his ear. âItâll be okay. Sheâs not Simone, and sheâs not as scary as she seems.â
The next thing I know, his head shifts to the left and our mouths meet. Iâm not sure who initiated the kiss, but the sensation is warm, heady, and familiar all at once. It lasts only the briefest of moments, and then Oliver pulls away, his hand catching me by the elbow as I stumble backward.
âIâm sorry,â he apologizes over the loud music, his hazel eyes searching my face. âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine,â I smile, embarrassed.
âI didnât mean to...â
âItâs okay,â I insist, brushing it off. âReally, Oliver, itâs fine.
