Chapter 12

Alister

“Constance! Constance!”

I’m sprinting up the stairs and then through the hallway, my legs flying over the carpeted floor.

Please, don’t let me be too late. Please.

As I round the corner, Constance’s room comes into view. The door is closed and quiet. But I know how deceiving appearances can be.

“Constance!” I shout once again and then ram my shoulder into the door. It shudders against the force of my body but doesn’t budge. Of course, this is an expensive hotel with solid doors. But I’m not deterred. Constance might be in danger and if anything happens to her, it will all be my fault. I slam my shoulder again into the door, and again, and again, feeling it vibrate with each tackle…

“Alister.”

I turn. Julian is standing behind me. “What?”

“Did you try just opening it?”

“Of course not,” I snap. Anger floods through me. Constance is in danger, and my brother is wasting our time by giving stupid suggestions. “The door is obviously locked. Why would she leave it open for so—”

There is a click as the handle turns, and I am startled into silence. Giving Julian a glance, I revolve the handle completely, and then push the door, half-expecting it to still be locked. But it is not. It swings open fully, revealing the room inside.

I am not prepared for the sight that greets me.

What in heaven’s name?

There are no people in the room. Only two… wolves. And one of them is dead. Its eyes are vacant marbles fixed at some point on the ceiling, and its ashen fur is coated with dried blood. As I take a step closer, I realize who the fallen wolf is, and I freeze in place.

It…It can’t be. How is this possible? Besides me, Julian, too, is speechless, and I know why. We’re both staring at the same thing, our expressions confused, our eyes unbelieving.

Above the dead wolf’s body, there stands another wolf. A kind of wolf I have never seen before. Its coat is whiter than a polar bear’s fur, whiter than the highest tips of snow-capped mountains. And its eyes and mouth are darker than a moonless, starless sky. But that’s not the strangest part. Not by far.

The wolf. I know it’s Constance.

This can’t be.

“Constance?” My voice is incredulous. Surely, this is some big misunderstanding. It must be.

But then, before my shocked eyes, the wolf begins to transform. I watch with a mixture of awe and horror as Constance’s slender, cream-colored figure emerges, her hands crossed over her naked body in protection.

I am so utterly in disbelief, that it takes a grunt from Julian and his hand tapping my shoulder before I realize the proper thing to do is.

“Oh, sorry.” I turn around and hear the dresser drawer door open as Constance finds some clothes for herself. A minute later, her voice reaches my ears.

“You guys can turn around now.”

We do. She’s standing there in loose-fitting pajama pants and a t-shirt, staring at us both uncertainly.

“What happened here?” Julian asks, his voice suddenly cold.

“I—Uncle Albert tried to attack me.
