Michael stood in Davidâs living room with three other angels and the rest of Davidâs makeshift family. Emma was trying to keep Tommy calm; he wanted to be outside in the mix of things. Grandpa and Duke were ready to tear it up, but the number of demons surrounding the house was daunting. Father Mark, fascinated by Michael and the other angels, didnât realize how much danger they faced. Outside, demons were all over the house. They crawled on the roof, clawed at windows, and milled about the yard.
âWhy arenât they coming in and attacking?â Tommy asked. âIâm not afraid of them. I want to tear a few of them into shreds and kick some demon butt!â
Michael looked at Tommy and smiled. âIt doesnât appear that there is a demon in charge out there. I see only minions. They wonât attack with me in here unless someone is telling them what to do.â
âWell, then leave so that we can get on with the fight!â Tommy said, punching the air in front of him.
âSometimes avoiding the fight is the best path. You know you canât beat the demons; you can just slow them down for a while. They always put themselves back together in Hell and are back sooner than you want.â Michael said.
âThe sooner they come back, the sooner I can kick their butts again!â Tommy said, flexing his bicep.
âI think itâs best if we sit this one out. I promised David I would watch over you. His house has seen enough battles.â
Just then, Michael heard Davidâs cries for help. âDavidâs in trouble. This isnât an attack. This is a diversion. Iâve got to go.â He looked at the other three angels. âYou two stay here just in case. Duke, you know what to do if something happens. There are a lot of them for you to handle, but if I donât get to David right away . . .â Michael shot out of the house right through the roof without leaving a mark, soaring through the sky as nothing more than a white blur.
Saraphiss appeared in front of Davidâs house in a flash of red. Now, I will finish this little group off, and Lucifer can have his way on Earth with no more interruptions . . .
Saraphiss arrived on the scene with a smile on his face. David was alone on the steps of a church, no doubt dead by now, the ragged little family trapped inside Davidâs house, and Michael played for a fool, unable to help either group. Saraphiss would remember this victory for at least a few thousand years.
Saraphiss yelled something that must have been the demon equivalent of âattack,â although it sounded more like an elephant vomiting. The demons launched themselves through the doors and broken windows of the house. The rag-tag family huddled together in the living room with Duke and the two angels standing in front of them. The demons closed in as Duke and the angels charged.
Even though Duke and the angels were a force to reckon with, no angel fought like Michael.
