“No. No.” She kept screaming at him in her mind, but he wouldn’t reply anymore.

The light cruiser’s drag beam took her in an instant and dumped her in an instant, setting her right down in front of the precise coordinates that led to the mouth of the palace.

She tumbled down an incline, and before she could stop herself, the palace appeared around her.

It happened in the blink of an eye. As Leana’x, with her Royal Family blood, tumbled over the unseen threshold of the palace, the ancient Original technology activated. In an instant, where there had once been nothing more than pockmarked rock and dust, a palace grew. And Leana’x rolled right into the mouth of it.

She was safe.

Even though Admiral Jones sent several ionic blasts toward the mouth of the palace, it didn’t matter – the strongest shields in all of the Milky Way blinked into place and absorbed every blast easily.

Leana’x?

She finally got to her feet. She threw herself forward, tried to extend a hand beyond the shields, but she was rebuffed.

They pushed her back.

For they knew her worth even if she did not.

“No,” she screamed, tears streaking her cheeks. “John.”

He didn’t answer.

Not in her mind, not using the audio link between their spacesuits.

No answer. Because he couldn’t.

She fell down, and she sobbed.

The end of Ava Episode Two.
