OZ

Quinn killed them all, burning down their lair to compensate for the fate they had so unjustly bestowed upon Bryce and Lily. Oz watched the flames, his mind processing the information Quinn had dumped on him just before they set out on their little arson mission. He could handle it all, even the crazy fact that Ma wasn’t their mother, even the fact that people lived in the mountains. But the one fact that had him in a tailspin was that True wasn’t his sister. She was his perfect mate. It all made sense now; his yearning for her, his need, his overly protective…no, possessive, inclinations. He didn’t want another man’s hands on her, couldn’t bear the thought of anyone else having her. He was free to love her now, but how could he ever ask her for anything after he had violated her? Would she want anything to do with him once he found her after what he had done? He didn’t deserve her forgiveness. There was no excuse for what he had done. But he wanted her still, couldn’t help the feelings that rose within him.

The screams yanked him out of his thoughts. He glanced about but no one moved to help. No one objected to the justice, although it terrified them.

“What about payback?” Oz asked Quinn.

Quinn turned to look at him, the blazing orange of the inferno dancing in his green eyes. “From who? Aaron is dead, his empire is in ashes. Do you see anyone protesting to his destruction? This is the nature of the world, and the world is a slightly better place without Aaron and his thugs in it.”

Oz could fully agree with that, but he couldn’t help but worry about the possible repercussions.

Quinn seemed to read his thoughts “Put it of your mind, Oz. There are more important things to worry about now.”

Indeed there were. Oz was surprised that his head hadn’t exploded with all the information dumped on him before Quinn’s little thug bonfire. So many revelations about him and True, how they were made...none of that mattered now though, the main thing was that she was alive. The main thing was that he was going to get her.

The mountains beyond the Waste Lands…

“You’re sure that’s where she’ll be” Oz asked.

“Yes.”

“What if she gets out? What if…”

“I’ll know. I have my eyes there.”

Oz nodded, his body still a little shaky from the Darkness rising hours before. It had stopped, though. Even at the point of no return, the Darkness had ceased its ascent and retreated into its box. He was confounded. That had never happened before and he suspected that Quinn was somehow the key.

A woman approached Quinn and whispered something in his ear. He nodded and she left.

“Who was that?” Oz asked.

Quinn pulled up the hood of his beige cloak. “We have to go.” He started walking away.

“But who was that?” Oz followed.

“Stop talking.”

Anger flared in his chest and he battled to control it. He had put up with Quinn’s abrupt attitude from the get go, but he was nobody’s bitch.
