As usual, Tara was the first one to log on to the conference call. Without so much as a hello, she launched into an update about her plans for the engagement party. “Did you look at the links I sent you for the envelopes? You’ll be relieved to hear I decided on the green one with the gold-leaf seal. If you can believe it, it took me almost as long to choose the envelope as the actual invitation…”

Paige tried to murmur and nod at the right times during Tara’s patter, but she found herself becoming more and more annoyed. She felt like asking her cousin, Why do you expect me to be fascinated with every last detail of your stationery when you can’t listen to me talk for two minutes about something I think is interesting, like Violet receiving a commendation from the mayor?

By the time the guys had logged onto the call—Dustin was late, as usual—Paige’s patience had worn thin. She decided she was going to take control of the conversation from the start.

“Before I update you about the cottage, there are a few pieces of news I want to share with you,” she announced. “I’ve already told Tara what I’ve recently discovered about Violet, but I think you guys should hear it, too, since it’s part of our family’s history.”

“You’re not going to tell them about the locket, are you?” Tara whined. “You yourself said the guys wouldn’t be interested in hearing about a piece of jewelry.”

“Actually, I was going to tell them about Violet sewing a record-breaking number of blankets for soldiers during the war. But thanks for reminding me about the locket. I almost forgot I hadn’t shared that with them, either.”

“Arg,” moaned Dustin. “I thought you were going to give us an update about what you found out from the real estate agent. Can you start with that and save the chitchat for the end of the call? I’m running on a tight schedule here.”

Paige didn’t appreciate her brother referring to something that was meaningful to her as “chitchat” and she suggested, “Then you might want to refrain from interrupting while I share a few things I’ve learned about Violet. They show that we were wrong about what happened between her and Edward Hathaway when she was young, and it casts her in a different light.” As an extra warning, she added, “Until I’m finished saying what I want to say I’m not providing an update about the cottage.”

Dustin rolled his eyes, but he didn’t say anything else, so Paige dived into sharing what she’d learned. Without divulging the specifics of Joseph’s anecdotes, she mentioned how thrilled she’d been to meet him and how highly he had regarded Violet as his babysitter. Paige also revealed what she’d discovered about Edward and Violet, as well as about Grandpa Frank’s possible interference in their romance. Neither her brother or her cousins seemed fazed by what she told them. They listened without interrupting, but she got the sense they were indulging her in order to move on as quickly as possible.
