It’s All Connected

BECKON WITH RED

Red berries begin to ripen on bushes and trees just as birds are getting ready to migrate in fall. The color signals that the fruit is ripe and that it’s usually high in fat, too. Bluebirds, robins, grosbeaks, thrushes, and other songbirds taste the umami (satisfying savory flavor) of the berries, which lets them know it’s extra nutritious, and they settle in to chow down. By paying attention to when your dogwood or other red berries ripen, you’ll know when songbirds are on the move.
