On the trip out of Shadespire Castle, Alexander and Isaac talked about the history and politics of the Eternal Empire. Gabriel heard every word as clear as day but he wasn’t in the headspace to take in any information. He wrestled his own thoughts, trying to make sense of what he’d just seen.

For practically his whole life Gabriel believed his father, the man he’d grown up idolizing, had abandoned them. Not for some great cause or noble sacrifice but for a dropship full of random soldiers. Gabriel knew even back then that wasn’t a healthy way of seeing things. Those men had friends, family, loved ones who all cared for them and needed them to return. Yet those lives had cost him his father.

And now he knew that was all a lie.

His father hadn’t thrown away his life for nothing. He died trying to keep his family safe. Probably the whole world while he was at it too. There were far more details in the recordings Murphy pulled off the Falken, Gabriel was sure of it, but restoring the files to anything useful was going to take months, maybe years.

Either way it wouldn’t make a difference. Gabriel knew the truth now.

His thoughts went back to the dark turns his life took after he lost his father. The deep depression he fell into. The loss of all hope. The overwhelming feeling of being abandoned. Would his life have been any different had he known the truth of his father’s death? And what of the path not taken? What would have happened if his father had decided to flee with the fleet toward reinforcements?

Gabriel took a slow inhale then let it drift past his lips. No point worrying about the past, he thought as the city vanished from sight behind the castle spire. The past was over and done with. Nothing could or would change it without figuring out time travel—which was something Gabriel wasn’t entirely sure was out of the realm of possibility since they learned magic was a real thing. Even assuming he could go back in time to save his father, would he?

As it was, multiple strands existed. Each one a variation of his world with key events being changed. Was his father’s death one such event? Maybe. And if he went back and changed an event what sort of effect would that have on his own reality? Would it merge with another strand, change course? For all he knew it was a cannon event and the universe would go out of its way to ensure what had to happen would happen. Gabriel didn’t like that thought. The idea of fate and things being predestined was something that always bothered him. It was the sort of thing that made one’s choices and life as a whole pointless. It was partially why he was glad Luna and her seer abilities were more like a detailed guess at what could happen in the future rather than what would.

Since there was no point in trying to change the past, Gabriel focused on learning from it.
