Weaknesses:

Narrative approaches are highly unstructured. Researchers need to be skilled both in data collection and analysis. Comparisons beyond the studied units or across organizations are difficult to make and not that meaningful.

5.2.2 Assumptional Analysis

Purpose

The purpose of the assumptional analysis is to surface underlying assumptions that guide behavior/practices in an organization.

Background of the instrument

Assumptional analysis was originally developed to uncover the relevant underlying assumptions that different scientists make concerning the nature of human behavior, social environments, and the interactions between these (Kilmann 1983). Given that several scholars consider commonly-held assumptions at the center or heart of culture (e.g., Schein 1985, 1995), this method can be used more generally for uncovering cultural assumptions of a unit or a firm.
