It was now daylight. Heavy black clouds clustered in the sky, while a driving drizzle was quickly turning the boggy earth into a series of large lakes of water, through which rising pieces of mud appeared like tiny islands.

For weeks before the attack we had been instructed on a model battlefield, as to the various directions we were to take in getting to our objective which was termed the black line. Well to tell the truth, even with the photographic birds-eye views of the real battlefields, I could not really grasp how we were going to carry out such niceties in the face of enemy fire and finish up on the black-line according to plan. Anyhow the headquarters’ staff seemed to think the plan would work so as a consequence we started off in one direction, then we suddenly swung sharply to the right, then some yards further on we turned half left, and I’m sure we covered nearly a mile before we even saw a trench.
