MEDITATION HAD NEVER been Livia’s forte. She knew how to do it, but making it part of her routine had proved impossible. It was likely only possible for her to do it up a mountain. After all, what else was there to do up a mountain?

Martha had been able to meditate. But then, Martha had been able to do most things. Probably even Tully could meditate, uptight though he could be.

She drew a deep breath for four counts, held it for four counts and then tried to exhale the anger that had flared. A barrage of thoughts invaded her consciousness after only seconds and she lost her rhythm. Someone had murdered her sister. Until she’d figured out who and ripped them apart, she could trust no one.

A noise beyond the bedroom door brought Haymaker to mind. Fine, she could probably trust him. He’d not been here when Martha had been killed. And Tully? Hard to say. He’d wanted to speak to Martha about the tabkhir story and it had been clear she knew something. What if she’d told him something he hadn’t wanted to hear? Or refused to speak to him at all? What might he have done then? Tully was a good man, but a broken one, and if Martha had been involved in the death of his wife …

Of course, he’d been injured too. But what if that was misdirection? Something to throw them off the scent?

She would do it herself. She was all she had left. And for the first time, she had resources. Significant resources she could put to work. Martha’s legacy had ensured that, and she would repay her with justice. Screw the meditation.
