Red Lodge

The day after the bombings, Ramsey and Lucas sat in the living area next to the grand table where the Council of Five held their regular meetings. They had six virtual screens up with various local and regional news feeds. Sky and Lexi had completed their modifications and sat along with them. It was always best if Lucas could spend some time with Sky and Lexi while still in Red Lodge to see if the changes had met expectations. Lucas could definitely see a difference.

“Hey, Lucas,” Sky said while sitting right up against him with her hand on his leg. “I never asked you, what’s your favorite color?” Lucas stared at her for a second before replying.

“My favorite color?” He threw up his hands and then said. “OK. Gold, I guess.”

“Why gold?” said Lexi who had cozied up to him on his other side. Lucas this time looked at Ramsey and raised his eyebrows.

“Because I want to be rich, like him,” Lucas said, pointing at Ramsey.

“OK, mine is red,” said Sky.

“I like blue,” added Lexi, who continued. “Now what’s your favorite song?”

Lucas again looked at Ramsey, this time with a more accusatory stare. Ramsey slowly raised both hands, and motioned for Lucas to calm down.

“Take it easy, my friend. They’re trying to get to know you better. This will improve your relationship with them. You should remember their answers, too. Could come in handy on birthdays, anniversaries, if you know what I mean? I think they both might want you to be more considerate of their needs in the future. Isn’t that right, Lexi?” She quickly took the bait.

“Yes, I like presents. When is the last time you got me anything, Lucas? Like never?”

“Wow!” exclaimed Lucas. “OK, Ramsey, can we step out on the deck for a second?”

“Sure, be right back ladies. I’m just going to give some gift-giving advice to old Lucas here. He doesn’t seem very experienced.”

“OK, I told you to relax,” Ramsey said as soon as they walked out. “I added an advanced human emotion prototype to them. I think you’ll really like it. I know it’s going to be a bit different for a while.”

“But I didn’t ask for this …”

“You asked them to notice the world around them more. To be more engaging with it. That means you, too,” Ramsey said. “Get it? They’ll need to know you better to be more conversational. And, if you know them better, they can respond with more interesting answers. Obviously, they’ve always had extremely advanced learning capabilities, but this mod gives them more focus on what they’re learning, so they can be better friends, companions, whatever.”

“That makes sense, I guess, but what about this gift thing?”

“It helps build stronger bonds. Get over it and get them something occasionally. They have more appreciation thoughts built in now too.” Ramsey paused and then added. “You know what they don’t have, and I should put in? Jealousy. How about I add a little of that? That would be a fun thing to watch.
