NINETEEN

BNV NIR

The transport entered the Nir and Supreme Commander Viar rubbed a throbbing ache above the bridge of his nose. The mraz he had consumed on Kruva was having a harsh effect on him, but he tried not to make it known to his men that he was suffering. Besides, there was much to plan to distract him from the gnawing ache.

“I must admit that I am surprised the young prince was willing to join us,” Furra said. Green lights shone above him denoting that the transport was no longer in open space but flying in the artificial atmosphere of the Bastian warship.

“Did you go there assuming the worst?” Xran asked. A smile curled Viar’s lips at the way Furra gawked at the other man’s accusation.

“I did not, but considering the circumstances, I assumed it would require more than one trip to ensure we had allegiance with them.”

“And why is that?” Viar asked, his words slurred enough that he asked it once more, careful to articulate each syllable better.

“I was afraid we would be seen as hostile considering that we overthrew our own government to seize control. The mission may be the same, but the alliances formed before you took at the seat of power predate you, sir. I anticipated some resistance.” Furra was careful with his word choices to not stir the new supreme commander’s anger.

“You raise a good point, but most alliances care not about the person they ally themselves with, but about the military in which they do so. I am in control of the Bastian military, and Prince Kashen recognizes that we can annihilate the Kruvian Empire if he did not give in to my demands. I was confident in our endeavor, and I believe we will see a repeat in success when approaching the Quashai’, though I am skeptical of what that regime could provide that we ourselves cannot.”

“The Quashai’ is a wildcard, sir,” Xran said. “I did a report on their regime while at university. It does not follow traditional leadership roles; it appears the one in control does so through manipulation. I don’t know how that works, but I can’t see it being an effective way to govern without there being some sense of loyalty.”

“Loyalty can be bought,” Furra interjected.

“It can also be manipulated,” Viar added. “Perhaps we should research the Quashai’ before approaching them. If we find out what makes them tick, then maybe we can use that for our benefit.” A wave a nausea rushed over the supreme commander, and he swallowed hard, holding his breath as the transport touched down on the hangar deck of the Nir.

The sensation passed, but not before a wave of concern struck him as he watched Furra attempt to open the transport door. “It’s locked.”

Viar turned his gaze to the cockpit where the pilot depressed a red button before sitting back stoically in his seat. The red button flickered in rapid succession. He knew in that moment that it wasn’t the switch to open the transport’s doors.
