With your custom patterns and brushes you need to start unleashing your creativity and draw something amazing. To make your life easier, here are some of the types of Photoshop drawings and their characteristics.
Types of Photoshop Drawings
Charcoal is the earliest form of art known to humans, as the very first drawings were made by rubbing burned twigs on a canvas. And now after thousands of years, charcoal remains one of the most expressive mediums of drawing, creating dramatic paintings. Different pressure creates different shades, which are very important for charcoal paintings, as this type of art is based on shades to create depth and play with light. In offline medium, charcoal paintings require a fixative to prevent smearing; digital drawings are less fussy, pixels are not going anywhere.
When you start a charcoal drawing in Photoshop you can use both black and white images and colored ones, as the colors are easy to remove by desaturating the image.
After you have your image, you need to add a new layer, which needs to be filled with color, as this will be your charcoal drawing base, so you can pick any shade you want, darker or lighter.
The next step is using the glowing edges filter to adjust the image. This filter is one of the most misunderstood filters in Photoshop. Once you apply it, it allows you to adjust the edges, which cannot be achieved in other filters.
To continue your charcoal painting you have to play with layer masks, patterns and brushes until you achieve the desired result.
Pastel is a vivid medium of painting which allows you to live up a sketch and take it to another level. Pastels are dry and can be used to create wonderful scenes, like Degas' ballerinas. They are unique because they allow you to show the luminosity and the watery mediums in a realistic way. This is why many pastel portraits look like they are waiting for you to speak to them.
It is very important to note that many pastel artists use readymade colored paper, textured with sand particles.
Translated in Photoshop, this means colored layers and lots of patterns and textures, as well as brushes. When you create a new pastel drawing in Photoshop you can use a sketch, a cartoon sketch or a picture. You can also toggle between these three by using glowing edges filter and desaturation. You need to experiment a lot with textures and multiple blending option when you create a pastel drawing, as these will give you the grainy look of the paper.
Watercolors are probably the most versatile type of paintings. They can be used anywhere and the wide mixes between color, binder and water allows the painter to create fresh, semi-translucent and vivid dashes, which blend together to create a realistic painting.
When it comes to watercolors there are many mediums of painting, from guache, which is opaque, to tempera and the actual watercolors. With multiple types of paint, the techniques are also varied.
One of the popular techniques is wet on wet: as the name implies, the canvas is watered before the colors are applied.
