Chapter Twelve

Darmiya glanced up from her computer tablet, not quite sure what had stirred her from her calculations. As soon as she saw the blond head at the other end of the ECC, she knew. President Tylio and her entire entourage strode between equipment and desks toward the center of the ECC. Soldiers stood at attention, but Tylio kept waving dismissively, and Darmiya could read the words “as you were” even from her corner. After resting for two full hours, she had eaten some food, and Calagan had even taken the time to fetch some of his miracle soup. She couldn’t even begin to count the all-nighters they had pulled with her brother’s soup as sustenance.

Darmiya quickly found that she couldn’t focus if she remained at the central desk in the ECC. Instead she took her tablet and what maps she required, and arranged a table for herself in the far east corner. It was a blessing not to have to use the hoverchair anymore. As long as she didn’t have to walk any long distances, she managed all right.

Pamas kept an eye on her, she could tell. So did Spinner, but rarely at the same time. As far as Darmiya could tell, mother and daughter remained entirely professional and seemed to have put their unresolved issues on hold, an ability they appeared to have in common. Darmiya had often wondered which one of her parents Spinner favored when it came to her physical appearance. While Spinner’s hair consisted of black, unruly curls, Pamas’s was smoothly brushed into a tight, black bun. Their eye color was the same, golden brown, though Pamas’s were hooded and with more lines around them. Pamas’s skin was paler than Spinner’s, and whereas Spinner had a wider nose, Pamas possessed a finely chiseled, elegant one. Both women were tall, wiry, and lanky.

Shaking her head at how easily Pamas’s mere presence could make her lose track of her task at hand, Darmiya punched in the new coordinates and double-checked them against her previous findings. The more she tried to figure out how and why the bodies of the wounded and dead had ended up in such a contradictory position, the more frustrated she became. If she intended to come up with something Dael and her soldiers, together with the law-enforcement agents, would find useful in their hunt for the terrorists, she needed a miracle right about now.

She rubbed her cheeks and was about to chuck her tablet across the ECC when she spotted it. At first she thought it was some strange illusion that her tired brain had created. She flipped the tablet upside down and then back again, a technique she had often used when she was an art student on Gemosis. When she examined the grid showing the bodies as well as the alignment of the black-matter shells, she began to tremble. Quickly she tapped in a few commands that superimposed the pattern on one of the maps. No matter how she adjusted the size, the result was the same.
