Recruitment into Arnie’s Army got a big boost during the 1959 Masters. Joining Arnold’s gallery from the start, the soldiers rallied around the charismatic defending champion who had won his first major a year earlier at Augusta National. Arnold shared the lead entering the final round, but his chances for back-to-back tournament titles met their doom when he triple-bogeyed the 12th hole.
