JUDGMENT AND THE FEAR OF THE LORD

At this final gate, the tenth gate, we learn that each of us will give a final account of the life we have lived. An inspection of our life will take place unveiling all that we have spoken and done. The Hebrew verb yare can mean “to fear, to respect, to reverence.” The Hebrew noun yirah usually refers to the “fear of God” and is viewed as a positive quality. This fear acknowledges God’s good intentions as expressed in Exodus 20:20, “‘Don’t be afraid,’ Moses answered them, ‘for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!’” Understanding this truth should bring us back to the place where the fear of the Lord is renewed. The fear of the Lord is not being afraid of God in a negative sense; it is reverencing, respecting, and honoring Him in all that we say and do.

We will know that this tenth gate is restored in our lives when the Fear of the Lord has returned, when we humble ourselves, when prayer is more of our lifestyle than just a life raft, when we seek His Face and His Perfect Will, and when we turn from our own ways.

Concerning the final judgment, the scriptures speak of two judgment seats - the Judgment Seat of Christ and the Great White Throne Judgment. No one will be standing with us at these judgments nor can anyone stand in for us - not our wives, husbands, children, pastor, or friends. We will stand individually, before God. At that time there will be no secrets and no court of appeals. There will be an unfiltered look at every motive, attitude, and decision of our lives that we did not repent of.

At the Judgment Seat of Christ, only born again believers will appear. The people at this Judgment Seat of Christ are saved and will be welcomed into the portal gates of heaven. It is at this judgment seat where rewards will be handed out. Paul wrote to the Church at Corinth that there will be those who suffer loss in rewards and that some will barely make heaven by the skin of their teeth. “Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”60

The other Judgment is the Great White Throne Judgment where the formal sentencing occurs at the end of the millennial reign of Christ. Some of the experiences that people have had as a “hell experience” were the equivalent to being held in the local county jail awaiting their sentencing by a judge who would ultimately send them to prison.
