Chapter Twenty-Six

Feeling Older Every Day

Alex couldn’t blame the townspeople for the way they reacted. These men had purposefully launched a war against them, killed many of their friends and relatives, and enslaved those who could not escape.

Mercy was not completely unknown in Kragdon-ah, but it was typically applied to the people of their own tribe. All others were met with suspicion. In a land as challenging as this, that was not too unexpected.

The first time Alex had seen his Kragdon-ah allies kill the remaining soldiers on the other side in a battle, he had been shocked and dismayed. Over the years, he had tried to sway opinion away from such acts of vengeance, but as here, his view was not always accepted.

When Alex’s army had allied with the Drakana to fight against the Northmen, they had fought until the last of those warriors were killed. That was mostly because no matter the odds, the Northmen would rather die with an ax in their hand than consider surrendering.

So, it wasn’t the fact that the opposition army had been completely wiped out that bothered him. It was that, for the first time in his life, he wondered if he had perhaps been more of a detriment to the men he led than anything. Perhaps with his advancing age, he had become too cautious. A commander that was unwilling to take risks was doomed to fail eventually.

Alex had been a soldier in one form or another for most of his adult life. When he had served in the military in the twenty-first century, he had mostly followed orders. Since Ganku-eh had first appointed him the leader of the collected armies that went against Douglas Winterborne, he had been the unquestioned leader of every battle he had fought.

He had tried to step down from that position again and again, but each time, someone dragged him back to a leadership role, whether it was a plea for help from Pandrick, or a request from his own daughter.

He knew he had a lot to think about on the way back to Winten-ah.

First, he had to finish things here.

The first thing he did was send one of the young warriors running back to Tharandon. He wanted him to tell everyone the news of the battle. Also, though Torana had made the trip to the island on foot, he had required a number of rests for his hurting feet and back. Alex wanted the young runner to fetch his horse and while he was at it, he should recruit a few more people to bring back enough horses that the older villagers would be able to ride on the way out.

The previous time that this location had fallen, the city had been destroyed. Alex wandered through the village, looking at the buildings and streets. These invaders had not harmed any of the structures in taking the city. They had obviously hoped to be able to live there for some time. He thought it would be a shame to raze it again.
